Apple maintains a list of device models which support Augmented Reality through ARKit. The following iOS devices support Augmented Reality features in addition to interactive 3D experiences:
iPhone SE, 6s, 7, 8, X and the Plus variants of those phones
iPad 5th generation or newer
iPad Pro (all models)
Notably, this does not include older iPad Mini and iPad Air devices.
The device must be running iOS 12.3 or later to use AR functionality.

Google maintains a list of device models which support Augmented Reality though ARCore.
This includes most devices purchased in the last few years from high end manufacturers like Asus, Google, HMD Global, Huawei, LG, Motorola, OnePlus, Oppo, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, Xiaomi, and more.
The device must be running Android 7.0 or later to use AR functionality.

Virtual Reality vs. Augmented Reality
Augmented reality brings the real world into play, allowing for infinite ways to improve real life. Virtual reality is effective for simulations, some training environments but is antisocial and very limited due to hardware requirements — it requires expensive headsets. There are some AR headsets available on the market, but the vast majority of smartphones can also be used for AR experiences.

Augmented Reality requires specific 3D file formats — most notably glTF and USD. Ocavu is able to accept virtually any type of 3D file and, using our proprietary pipeline, convert and optimize your files to be used in AR experiences.
There are many ways to find and create 3D assets, but Augmented Reality experiences are most enjoyable and useful when they use 3D models that have been optimized for AR. Ocavu is able to deliver an end-to-end solution. We bring many of our customers from no 3D models to fully implemented solutions on their website. Because Ocavu’s focus is on cross-platform compatibility and AR technology at scale, Ocavu’s 3D modeling rates are some of the most competitive in the market.
It depends on how well the 3D model was authored. Augmented Reality works best with low-poly 3D models to enable high performance on mobile devices, and a skilled 3D modeler is able to create low-poly models that maintain the high visual fidelity required for lifestyle images. Sometimes high-poly models are still necessary, which is why Ocavu has a network of highly capable 3D artists who can create high-quality, optimized models for AR, in addition to high-poly, top-notch models for lifestyle imagery.
glTF or GLB are the preferred file formats for almost all Augmented Reality applications. This standard is maintained by the Khronos group and is the fastest-growing standard among 3D file formats. Ocavu uses additional encryption and compression to enable these files to work on dozens of different platforms. Other common file types we often receive are .OBJ, .FBX, .DAE, .MAX and many types of CAD files.
There are many types of inputs you can provide to create 3D models. The most popular input Ocavu receives is pictures and dimensions. Ocavu can create 3D models from what is typically already on most product detail pages. Ocavu can also work with CAD and other design files from popular programs like Solid Works.
Installation can be as fast as 20 minutes and as long as a few days. Ocavu's web AR solution is lightweight and compatible with all Ecommerce platforms, ranging from Magento and Shopify, to custom websites and enterprise solutions.
